To the east of Malaga, hugging the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range are the Alpujarras. Little has changed here over the centuries except for improved roads and a little modern construction. The hillsides are dotted with tiny villages that date back to Moorish times. Picturesque and full of charm where village life continues here as it always has – at a slow pace. Traditional handicrafts such as blankets, rugs and fabrics are on sale everywhere in those typical Alpujarran colours and visitors get a chance to see weaving in process. The Alpujarras are too far from the Costa del Sol for a day trip but an overnight stay will include visiting the old Berber towns and a night in Orgiva, made famous through Driving Over Lemons! A very relaxing and scenic journey.
The cave dwellings of Guadix and its surrounding surreal landscape are fascinating and a visit to those is included with a trip to Spain’s first Renaissance Castle at Calahorra – a long but interesting day.
